Xiomara Castro, the first woman president in Honduras, took over office on 27th January 2022, her country suffers from poverty, migration, drug trafficking, violence and corruption. Castro promised to fight these problems that encourage a wave of migration to the United States.
The 62-year-old wife of ousted former president Manuel Zelaya (2006-2009) supported her during her campaign.
Castro won the November 28th elections with a coalition led by her party Libertad y Refundación (Free), defeating the rightist Nacional Party.
