This Wednesday the 16th February 2022, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow at the Kremlin Palace, the meeting lasted approximately two hours.

The list of topics discussed in the meeting was: support for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council; encouraging increased cooperation in agribusiness; and the recognition of Brazil as the economic leader in South America.

After the session, Jair Bolosnaro said “it was more than a perfect marriage the feeling that I take with me to Brazil. I also noticed that President Putin felt the same.”

Bolsonaro was able to be near Putin as the Russian government asked the Brazilian President to perform five PCR-type tests to detect Covid-19. The two presidents even shook hands and had lunch together, which didn’t happen with the French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, since they refused to undertake all required tests by the Russian government, therefore, they were received from a distance by Putin.

In a gesture that distances him from Washington, Bolsonaro said that Brazil is “in solidarity with Russia” and that Putin “seeks peace”. “My understanding is that President Putin is also a person who seeks peace” he told reporters, downplaying warnings from Western powers about the risks of the meeting.
